Waiting on A Winter by Sam Flot

Waiting On A Winter

The sun breaks
Through the horizon’s daystorm
Southerly confident northerly not
Rain falls in buckets until more wind moves this storm along a bit
The birds are undeterred
Everything is soaking up the rain
The conifer trees, the tall grass, the blackberry brambles
The woodpile, the gutters and the goldfish pond
This earth is a sponge ready to receive
A sustaining stormy winter
A crashing ocean on headlands
Spraying wet winter feedback
Onto the ice plants and the burnpiles of skotch broom
As the rain falls harder and most humans hunker
On this coastal El Nino afternoon
As this Pacific Storm pacifies this bone dry landfall
Spreading far and wide across the land of the drought
Eroding, yes, but what choice do we have
When Mother Nature’s whimsy catches a breeze or doesn’t?

All the cycles are cycling and
All the circles will complete themselves
As the hard rain falls on soft mud
As the tough yet tender humans hunker down
Waiting on a winter like never before

Lighter Than Ever by Sam Flot

Lighter Than Ever

Senses delicate and desperate
This is not trivial
Densest tenses of slogging through
Across and over
We built the break to stall the onslaught and
We stand here now broken
Looking forward

Released to be a blank slate
Freed from any connections
Other than my mate for life and beyond

Left in bad sneakers and I’m happy to live this moment
As much as all the others
I’m happy to stand on this surface
With existential sense of purpose
This land doesn’t give you what you ask for
This land gives you what you need
So go grab your things and mount your steed
The road leads
Itself out underneath you
Like the blessings of impermanence
Dropped on your head with all the grace of a swinging 2x4
Gather your understandings and move on
Keeping in mind
Moving On Day is easier than Moving Day
Any day

Carry on lighter than ever
Floating on the strength of the air all around us
Floating above the dirt underneath us and
The water inside of us
Carry on with respect for all the elements
Including fire and the majesty of nature in process

Carry on elemental as the day you were born
On a new earth, drinking new water,
Breathing new oxygen, sparking a new fire
In the same ole belly

Hammer My Soul by Sam Flot

Hammer My Soul

Displaced but placated, nonetheless
Dancing to my theme music
The dream continued
The ideal was met
Or would be once the future unravels

The hotter the fire
The easier the iron melts
To be fashioned to a shape
Unsatisfied to just exist
I put my iron in the fire

Prepared or not for the twisted outcome
I gave myself for re-shaping
Hammer my soul
Bend it around the art of the world
I will take its shape upon me
And carry on as happy, if not happier
Than ever before

We Are by Sam Flot

We Are

Built above cadences
Raised in gradients
By traded winds
On fleeting clouds
Milky ways and the persistent insistence
Of a good foundation

A traditional rumination fulminating in
Practical radicals solut-ing
Not like those prob-lemmings
Selected to direct even more blockbuster prequels

Lost moreso in the vein of
The unseen endeavor unleashed on forever
Chanted like the playground
Is this lifetime’s proving ground

Treating the loud just like the silky and
When the tertiary become the titular
Fall will roam all day
Serpintine in pathways
Pertinent to the topical terra firma
 Underfoot and in my aura

Silently
Cooperating again
To turn the anxious axles
To gain the cheapest traction
To roll wherever the gravity blows us
